ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਛੈਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਘੁੰਗਰੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਨੰਦ ਹਨ,

The urges of the heart are like cymbals and ankle-bells;

ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਢੋਲ ਇਕ ਰਸ ਵੱਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

the drum of the world resounds with the beat.

ਨਾਰਦ ਵਰਗੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ, ਕਲਜੁਗ ਦੇ ਪਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਨੱਚ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

Naarad dances to the tune of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;

ਪ੍ਰਹੇਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰੱਖਣ?

where can the celibates and the men of truth place their feet? ||1||

ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਉਤੋਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਘੋਲੀ ਵੰਞਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak is a sacrifice to the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਛ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

The world is blind; our Lord and Master is All-seeing. ||1||Pause||

ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਗੋਂ, ਮੁਰੀਦ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

The disciple feeds on the Guru;

ਅਤੇ ਟੁੱਕਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home.

ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਬਰਸ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ,

If one were to live and eat for hundreds of years,

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਪਵੇਗਾ, ਜਦ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਆਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

that day alone would be auspicious, when he recognizes his Lord and Master. ||2||

ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।

Beholding the sight of the petitioner, compassion is not aroused.

ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਵੱਢੀ ਲੈਦਾ ਜਾਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

No one lives without give and take.

ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਓਦੋ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਉਸਦੀ ਤਲੀ ਤੇ ਕੁਛ ਧਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

The king administers justice only if his palm is greased.

ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਹ ਪਸੀਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

No one is moved by the Name of God. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਦਮੀ ਕੇਵਲ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਨ।

O Nanak, they are human beings in form and name only;

ਅਮਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਹਨ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ।

by their deeds they are dogs - this is the Command of the Lord's Court.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਜਾਣ ਲਵੇ,

By Guru's Grace, if one sees himself as a guest in this world,

ਤਦ ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੁਝ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

then he gains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||4||4||
