ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਚਉਪਦੇ।

Aasaa, First Mehl, Chau-Padhay:

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਇਲਮ ਦਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਹੈਂ, ਤਦ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ।

Contemplate and reflect upon knowledge, and you will become a benefactor to others.

ਜਦ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੰਜ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵੇਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰੁਸਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤੂੰ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ-ਅਸਕਾਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

When you conquer the five passions, then you shall come to dwell at the sacred shrine of pilgrimage. ||1||

ਜੇਕਰ ਮਨ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਘੁੰਗਰੂਆਂ ਦਾ ਵੱਜਣਾ ਹੈ।

You shall hear the vibrations of the tinkling bells, when your mind is held steady.

ਤਦ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਅੱਗੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

So what can the Messenger of Death do to me hereafter? ||1||Pause||

ਜਦ ਬੰਦਾ ਖ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਥੀ ਵੰਞਦਾ ਹੈ।

When you abandon hope and desire, then you become a true Sannyaasi.

ਜਦ ਯੋਗੀ ਜੱਤ ਸੱਤ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

When the Yogi practices abstinence, then he enjoys his body. ||2||

ਉਹੀ ਨਗਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਤਰਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।

Through compassion, the naked hermit reflects upon his inner self.

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ।

He slays his own self, instead of slaying others. ||3||

ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਿਬਾਸ।

You, O Lord, are the One, but You have so many Forms.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।

Nanak does not know Your wondrous plays. ||4||25||
