Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਅਧਰਮੀ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਦੀ ਹਿਰਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man's wife.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗਰਦਨ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਫਾਹੀ ਦਾ ਰੱਸਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਬਖੇੜਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਾਥਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts.

ਗੁਰੂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੰਦ ਖ਼ਲਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਬਦਚਲਣ ਇਸਤਰੀ, ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਪਰਾਏ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,

The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger;

ਅਤੇ ਭੋਗਬਿਲਾਸ ਜਾਂ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੇ ਅਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money

ਨੂੰ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਬਿਨਾ ਰੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ। (ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੈ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ)।

, but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6||

ਜੀਵ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਤੇ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਮ੍ਰਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

You may read, recite and study the scriptures,

ਅਤੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ, ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;

The Simritees, Vedas and Puraanas;

ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਣ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਬਹੁਤ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

but without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7||

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਪੀਹੇ ਦੀ ਮੀਂਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਣੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਹ ਹੈ।

As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,

and as the fish delights in the water,

ਓਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰੀ ਆਬਿ-ਹਿਯਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਰੱਜ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||

ਗਊੜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ।

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਜੋ ਅੜੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ,

One who dies in stubbornness shall not be approved,

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਲਿਬਾਸ ਪਹਿਨ ਲਵੇ, ਜਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਲਵੇ।

even though he may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes.

ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ, ਉਹ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1||

ਤੂੰ ਪੂਜਯ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ।

Believe in the Dear Lord, and you shall find peace of mind.

ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਕਰੇਗਾਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Forgetting the Naam, you shall have to endure the pain of death. ||1||Pause||

ਚੰਨਣ, ਊਦ ਦੀ ਲੱਕੜ, ਮੁਸ਼ਕ ਕਾਫੂਰ ਦੇ ਅਤਰ,

The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor,

ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਸਤੀ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਰਤਬੇ ਤੋਂ ਬੜਾ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

and the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity.

ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਝੂਠਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2||

ਬਰਛੇ, ਬੈਡਂ ਬਾਜੇ, ਰਾਜਸਿੰਘਾਸਣ ਅਤੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾਂ,

Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others

ਖ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਾਮਚੇਸ਼ਟਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।

Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3||

ਬਹਿਸ ਮੁਬਾਹਿਸੇ ਅਤੇ ਗਰਬ ਗ਼ਰੂਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism.

ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਆਦਮੀ ਆਰਾਮ ਬਖਸ਼ਣਹਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained.

ਬੇਸਮਝੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਜੀਵ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਲਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4||

ਰਕਮ ਬਗੈਰ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੌਦਾ ਸੂਤ ਲਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।

Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store.

ਕਿਸ਼ਤੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।

Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਲ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਘਾਟਾ ਹੈ।

Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5||

ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਮਾਰਗ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way.

ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਾਬਾਸ਼! ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ।

Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord's Union. ||6||

ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼! ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਹੈ।

Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who is the Keeper of this soul.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ।

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, contemplate this Ambrosial Nectar.

ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੋਭਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਰਦਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ!

The Glorious Greatness of the Naam is bestowed according to the Pleasure of Your Will. ||7||

ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਿਉ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਹੈ ਮਾਤਾ?

Without the Naam, how can I live, O mother?

ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਹੇਠਾ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ।

Night and day, I chant it; I remain in the Protection of Your Sanctuary.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, honor is attained. ||8||12||

ਗਉੜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ।

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਵਿਰਤ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਆਦਮੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਕੋਈ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ।

Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes.

ਕੋਈ ਟਾਂਵਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1||

ਮੈਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਦੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained.

ਜਦ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੁਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause||

ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਆਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions.

ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਆਉਣ ਲਈ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2||

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚਣ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੁਲਬੁਲੇ ਮਨੂਏ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੰਜ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵੇਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3||

ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found.

ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ, ਉਹ ਮਹਾਨ ਰੁਤਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4||

ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅਮਲ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਨ।

The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true.

ਉਹ ਨਿਡੱਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।

They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5||

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗ਼ਰੂਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕੀ ਖੱਟੀ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ?

Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain?

ਜੋ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਖੇੜੇ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6||

ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਭੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਦਰਅਸਲ ਕੁੱਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

Whatever exists, is in reality nothing.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਰੱਬੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

Obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, I sing the Glories of God. ||7||
