Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਚਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Gurmukh eradicates egotism from within.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਮਲੀਨਤਾ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਿਮੜਦੀ।

No filth sticks to the Gurmukh.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਕੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind of the Gurmukh. ||2||

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦਾ ਅਮਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਜ਼ਹਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗ਼ਰੂਰ ਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਸੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਠੰਡ ਚੈਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3||

ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨੂਏ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਖ-ਮਤ ਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ।

Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.

ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀ ਚਾਹੇ ਤੂੰ ਲੋਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣੇਗਾ।

You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਆਰਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4||

ਅਧਰਮੀ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਪਖੰਡੀ ਤੇ ਚਾਲਾਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ।

No matter what they do, it is not acceptable.

ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਜਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।

They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5||

ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰਾ ਘਣੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited.

ਬਗਲੇ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ।

They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate.

ਜਦ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੇ ਉਹ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||

ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।

Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਸਦਕਾ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

By Guru's Grace, one meets the Lord.

ਚੋਹਾ ਹੀ ਯੁਗਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।

The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7||

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਾਤੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੈ।

For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness.

ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਬੇਟੀ, ਮਾਇਆ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਮਾਰ ਸੁੱਟੀ ਹੈ।

Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਸਾਰੀ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰੀ ਕੂੜੀ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, without the Name, all clever tricks are false. ||8||2||

ਗਊੜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਤੀਜੀ।

Gauree, Third Mehl:

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੈ ਭਰਾਓ! ਇਸ ਯੁੱਗ ਦੇ ਮਜ਼ਹਬ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਨੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰੋ।

Learn the Dharma of this age, O Siblings of Destiny;

ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਦਰਸਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।

all understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru.

ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਹੈ।

Here and hereafter, the Lord's Name is our Companion. ||1||

ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ।

Learn of the Lord, and contemplate Him in your mind.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਗਿਲਾਜ਼ਤ ਨੂੰ ਧੋ ਸੁੱਟ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

By Guru's Grace, your filth shall be washed away. ||1||Pause||

ਬਹਿਸ ਮੁਬਾਹਿਸਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੰਗੇ-ਫ਼ਸਾਦਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

Through argument and debate, He cannot be found.

ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਫਿਕੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The mind and body are made insipid through the love of duality.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਪਾ।

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, lovingly attune yourself to the True Lord. ||2||

ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਜਹਾਨ ਗੰਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

This world is polluted with egotism.

ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।

By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਅਵਾਜਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Without meeting the Guru, they are tortured by Death. ||3||

ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਗ਼ਰੂਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਟ ਸੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ,

Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego.

ਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖ-ਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦੂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves.

ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||

ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਖੇਲ੍ਹ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ।

The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਅਧਰਮੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਮੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.

ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਮਰਪਨ ਅਟੰਕ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5||

ਬਹੁਰੂਪੀਆਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵੇਸ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The disguisers put on their various disguises.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically.

ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਡ ਹਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6||

ਧਾਰਮਕ ਭੇਸ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਈ ਜਣੇ ਚਲਾਕੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Putting on religious robes, they act so clever,

ਧਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਤੇ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਾ ਗੁਮਰਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਬੜੀ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਉਠਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||

ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever.

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਘਰਬਾਰੀ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਭਾਰੇ ਨਸੀਬਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਲ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

O Nanak, those who serve the True Guru are blessed and very fortunate. ||8||3||

ਗਊੜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਤੀਜੀ।

Gauree, Third Mehl:

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਣ ਘੋਖਣ ਦਾ ਬਾਨੀ ਹੈ।

Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas.

ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ।

From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire.

ਉਹ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਲਛਣਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿਜ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਦੇ।

They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1||

ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।

The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru.

ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੱਕਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਸੁਭਾਵਾ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਾਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਾ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities.

ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਕਾਰਨਾਮਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਾਵਯ ਵਾਚਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਡ ਉਤੇ ਸੱਟ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Reading about the debates and disputes, they are hit over the head by the Messenger of Death.
