Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਬਹੂ-ਰੂਪੀਏ ਵਾਂਗ ਉਹ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

In various costumes, like actors, they appear.

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

As it pleases God, they dance.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।

O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||7||

ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Sometimes, this being attains the Company of the Holy.

ਓਸ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫੇਰ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।

From that place, he does not have to come back again.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ-ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The light of spiritual wisdom dawns within.

ਉਹ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹੈ।

That place does not perish.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਇਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।

The mind and body are imbued with the Love of the Naam, the Name of the One Lord.

ਉਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਸ਼ਰੋਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He dwells forever with the Supreme Lord God.

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਆ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

As water comes to blend with water,

ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨੂਰ ਪਰਮ-ਨੂਰ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

his light blends into the Light.

ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੁਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

Reincarnation is ended, and eternal peace is found.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਤੋਂ ਸਦੀਵ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak is forever a sacrifice to God. ||8||11||

ਸਲੋਕ।

Salok:

ਮਸਕੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਰਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਜਜ ਹੋ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ।

The humble beings abide in peace; subduing egotism, they are meek.

ਭਾਰੇ ਆਕੜ ਖਾਂ ਪੁਰਸ਼, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਪਣੀ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗਲ ਸੜ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

The very proud and arrogant persons, O Nanak, are consumed by their own pride. ||1||

ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀ।

Ashtapadee:

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ,

One who has the pride of power within,

ਉਹ ਦੌਜ਼ਕ-ਵਾਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

shall dwell in hell, and become a dog.

ਜੋ ਹੰਕਾਰਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜੁਆਨ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who deems himself to have the beauty of youth,

ਉਹ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

shall become a maggot in manure.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who claims to act virtuously,

ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੌਦਾਂ ਹੈ।

shall live and die, wandering through countless reincarnations.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਜਮੀਨ ਦਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who takes pride in wealth and lands

ਉਹ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ ਅੰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਹੈ।

is a fool, blind and ignorant.

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਿਰਮਾਣਤਾ ਅਸਥਾਪਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

One whose heart is mercifully blessed with abiding humility,

ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਹ ਏਥੇ ਮੋਖ਼ਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, is liberated here, and obtains peace hereafter. ||1||

ਜੋ ਧਨਾਢ ਆਪਣੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਗੁਮਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who becomes wealthy and takes pride in it

ਇਕ ਤੀਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਭੀ ਕੁਝ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ।

not even a piece of straw shall go along with him.

ਜੋ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਫੌਜ ਅਤੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਉਮੀਦ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ,

He may place his hopes on a large army of men,

ਉਹ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ।

but he shall vanish in an instant.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜ਼ੋਰਾਵਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who deems himself to be the strongest of all,

ਉਹ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਆਹ ਬਣ ਜਾਏਗਾ।

in an instant, shall be reduced to ashes.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਰੂਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਛ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਿੱਦਦਾ,

One who thinks of no one else except his own prideful self

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਜਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੱਜਲ-ਖੁਆਰ ਕਰੇਗਾ।

the Righteous Judge of Dharma shall expose his disgrace.

ਜਿਸ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ,

One who, by Guru's Grace, eliminates his ego,

ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!

O Nanak, becomes acceptable in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ,

If someone does millions of good deeds, while acting in ego,

ਉਹ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਹੀ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ।

he shall incur only trouble; all this is in vain.

ਜੋ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਘਣੇਰੀਆਂ ਮੁਸ਼ੱਕਤਾ ਘਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ,

If someone performs great penance, while acting in selfishness and conceit,

ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਦੋਜ਼ਕ ਤੇ ਬਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ।

he shall be reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again.

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ, ਬਹੁਤੇ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਭੀ ਨਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,

He makes all sorts of efforts, but his soul is still not softened

ਦੱਸੋ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ, ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

how can he go to the Court of the Lord?

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who calls himself good

ਚਗਿਆਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦੀ।

goodness shall not draw near him.

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,

One whose mind is the dust of all

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ।

- says Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure. ||3||

ਜਦ ਤਾਂਈ ਉਹ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੁਛ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,

As long as someone thinks that he is the one who acts,

ਉਦੋਂ ਤਾਂਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਆਰਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

he shall have no peace.

ਜਦ ਤਕ ਆਦਮੀ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ੈ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,

As long as this mortal thinks that he is the one who does things,

ਤਦ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਗਰਭ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

he shall wander in reincarnation through the womb.

ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸਤ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,

As long as he considers one an enemy, and another a friend,

ਉਦੋਂ ਤਾਈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਥਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

his mind shall not come to rest.

ਜਦ ਤੋੜੀ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,

As long as he is intoxicated with attachment to Maya,

ਤਦ ਤੋੜੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

the Righteous Judge shall punish him.

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ ਕੱਟੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

By God's Grace, his bonds are shattered;

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

by Guru's Grace, O Nanak, his ego is eliminated. ||4||

ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਲੱਖ ਮਗਰ ਉਠ ਭਜਦਾ ਹੈ।

Earning a thousand, he runs after a hundred thousand.
