Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਈਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ?

Why forget Him, who has given us everything?

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਈਏ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ-ਧਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਹੈ?

Why forget Him, who is the Life of the living beings?

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਈਏ, ਜੋ ਉਦਰ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਡੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ?

Why forget Him, who preserves us in the fire of the womb?

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਟਾਵਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ।

By Guru's Grace, rare is the one who realizes this.

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਈਏ ਜੋ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

Why forget Him, who lifts us up out of corruption?

ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲੋ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ?

Those separated from Him for countless lifetimes, are re-united with Him once again.

ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਦਰਸਾਈ ਹੈ।

Through the Perfect Guru, this essential reality is understood.

ਨਫਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, God's humble servants meditate on Him. ||4||

ਹੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧੂਓ! ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੋ।

O friends, O Saints, make this your work.

ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਛਡ ਦਿਓ ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰੋ।

Renounce everything else, and chant the Name of the Lord.

ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਨ, ਚਿੰਤਨ, ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ।

Meditate, meditate, meditate in remembrance of Him, and find peace.

ਖੁਦ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਵਾ।

Chant the Naam yourself, and inspire others to chant it.

ਸਿਮਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਜਗਤ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

By loving devotional worship, you shall cross over the world-ocean.

ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗੀ।

Without devotional meditation, the body will be just ashes.

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਆਰਾਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ,

All joys and comforts are in the treasure of the Naam.

ਡੁਬਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

Even the drowning can reach the place of rest and safety.

ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰ,

All sorrows shall vanish.

ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਗ਼ਮ ਅਲੋਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!

O Nanak, chant the Naam, the treasure of excellence. ||5||

ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਲਈ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

Love and affection, and the taste of yearning, have welled up within;

ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਐਨ ਏਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਜਨ ਹੈ।

within my mind and body, this is my purpose:

ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

beholding with my eyes His Blessed Vision, I am at peace.

ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਪਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

My mind blossoms forth in ecstasy, washing the feet of the Holy.

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ।

The minds and bodies of His devotees are infused with His Love.

ਕੋਈ ਟਾਂਵਾਂ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Rare is the one who obtains their company.

ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਸ਼ੈ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰ,

Show Your mercy - please, grant me this one request:

ਕਿ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਾਂ।

by Guru's Grace, may I chant the Naam.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਆਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।

His Praises cannot be spoken;

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, He is contained among all. ||6||

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮਾਫ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਸਕੀਨਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੈ।

God, the Forgiving Lord, is kind to the poor.

ਉਹ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਤੇ ਆਸ਼ਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਦੀਵ ਮਾਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੈ।

He loves His devotees, and He is always merciful to them.

ਉਹ ਨਿਖਸਮਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਖਸਮ, ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਰਖਿਅਕ, ਅਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ-ਪੋਸਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।

The Patron of the patronless, the Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of the world,

ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਰਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

the Nourisher of all beings.

ਉਹ ਮੁਢਲੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।

The Primal Being, the Creator of the Creation.

ਉਹ ਨੇਕ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ-ਜਾਨ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।

The Support of the breath of life of His devotees.

ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰ9ਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Whoever meditates on Him is sanctified,

ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਿਲੀ-ਪਿਆਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਕੇਂਦਰਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

focusing the mind in loving devotional worship.

ਮੈਂ ਨੇਕੀ-ਵਿਹੂਣ, ਨੀਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ।

I am unworthy, lowly and ignorant.

ਹੈ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ, ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ ਮਾਲਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਰਣਾਗਤ ਸੰਭਾਲੀ ਹੈ।

Nanak has entered Your Sanctuary, O Supreme Lord God. ||7||

ਜੀਵ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ; ਸਵਰਗ, ਮੋਖਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ,

Everything is obtained: the heavens, liberation and deliverance,

ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਭਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟਤਾਈਆਂ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ।

if one sings the Lord's Glories, even for an instant.

ਉਹ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀਆਂ ਨਿਆਮਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤਾਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,

So many realms of power, pleasures and great glories,

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਰਿਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਾਰਤਾ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।

come to one whose mind is pleased with the Sermon of the Lord's Name.

ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੋਜਨਾਂ ਬਸਤਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ,

Abundant foods, clothes and music

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

come to one whose tongue continually chants the Lord's Name, Har, Har.

ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਮਲ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਭਾਇਮਾਨ ਤੇ ਦੌਲਤਮੰਦ ਹੈ ਉਹ,

His actions are good, he is glorious and wealthy;

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

the Mantra of the Perfect Guru dwells within his heart.

ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਾਸਾ ਬਖਸ਼ (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!),

O God, grant me a home in the Company of the Holy.

ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਨਾਜ਼ਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

All pleasures, O Nanak, are so revealed. ||8||20||

ਸਲੋਕ।

Salok:

ਰੂਪ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਤੇ ਅਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਫੁਰ ਤਾੜੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ।

He possesses all qualities; He transcends all qualities; He is the Formless Lord. He Himself is in Primal Samaadhi.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਜ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Through His Creation, O Nanak, He meditates on Himself. ||1||

ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀ।

Ashtapadee:

ਜਦ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਹੋਇਆ,

When this world had not yet appeared in any form,

ਉਦੋਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਿਸ ਕੋਲੋ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ?

who then committed sins and performed good deeds?

ਜਦ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਇਕਾਗਰਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ,

When the Lord Himself was in Profound Samaadhi,

ਤਦ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨੀ ਤੇ ਈਰਖਾ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਖਿਲਾਫ ਰਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ?

then against whom were hate and jealousy directed?

ਜਦ ਇਸ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਰੰਗ ਜਾ ਮੁਹਾਦਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਦਿਸਦਾ,

When there was no color or shape to be seen,

ਦਸੋ ਉਦੋਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਗਮੀ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਰਦੀ ਸੀ?

then who experienced joy and sorrow?

ਜਦ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਸੀ,

When the Supreme Lord Himself was Himself All-in-all,

ਉਦੋਂ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਿਥੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਸੀ?

then where was emotional attachment, and who had doubts?
