Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਆਪਣੀ ਖੇਡ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

He Himself has staged His own drama;

ਨਾਨਕ, ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ।

O Nanak, there is no other Creator. ||1||

ਜਦ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹੀ ਕੱਲਮਕੱਲਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਸੀ,

When there was only God the Master,

ਤਦ ਦੱਸੋ ਕੌਣ ਬੱਝਿਆ ਹੋਹਿਆ ਜਾਂ ਬੰਦਖਲਾਸ ਗਿਣਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ?

then who was called bound or liberated?

ਜਦ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੀ,

When there was only the Lord, Unfathomable and Infinite,

ਤਦ ਦਸੋ ਕੌਣ ਦੋਜਖ ਤੇ ਬਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਸੀ?

then who entered hell, and who entered heaven?

ਜਦ ਲੱਛਣਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਪਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਤੀ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਸਹਿਤ ਸੀ,

When God was without attributes, in absolute poise,

ਤਦ ਦੱਸੋ ਮਨ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਦਾ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਸੀ?

then where was mind and where was matter - where was Shiva and Shakti?

ਜਦ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਪਦਾ ਨਿਜ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਦੇ ਆਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ,

When He held His Own Light unto Himself,

ਤਦ ਕੌਣ ਨਿਧੜਕ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੋਲੋ ਡਰਦਾ ਸੀ?

then who was fearless, and who was afraid?

ਆਪਣਿਆਂ ਕੌਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਰਚਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।

He Himself is the Performer in His own plays;

ਨਾਨਕ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਪਾਰ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the Lord Master is Unfathomable and Infinite. ||2||

ਜਦ ਅਮਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਦੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਾਜਮਾਨ ਸੀ,

When the Immortal Lord was seated at ease,

ਦੱਸੋ ਉਦੋਂ ਆਵਾਗਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਸਨ?

then where was birth, death and dissolution?

ਜਦ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਮਾਲਕ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੀ ਸੀ,

When there was only God, the Perfect Creator,

ਦੰਸੋ ਓਦੋ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ ਸੀ?

then who was afraid of death?

ਜਦ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਝ ਸੋਚ ਤੋਂ ਉਚੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਸੀ,

When there was only the One Lord, unmanifest and incomprehensible,

ਉਦੋਂ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਕੋਲੋ ਪੁਛਦੇ ਸਨ?

then who was called to account by the recording scribes of the conscious and the subconscious?

ਜਦ ਕੇਵਲ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ, ਅਲਖ ਅਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੀ ਸੀ,

When there was only the Immaculate, Incomprehensible, Unfathomable Master,

ਉਦੋਂ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਖਲਾਸ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਕੜਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ?

then who was emancipated, and who was held in bondage?

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਅਦਭੁਤ ਹੈ।

He Himself, in and of Himself, is the most wonderful.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰੂਪ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, He Himself created His Own Form. ||3||

ਜਿਥੇ ਇਨਸਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੇਵਲ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਹੀ ਸੀ,

When there was only the Immaculate Being, the Lord of beings,

ਅਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਲੀਨਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਦੱਸੋ! ਤਦ ਉਥੇ ਸਾਫ-ਸੁਥਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਸੀ?

there was no filth, so what was there to be washed clean?

ਜਿਥੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਜਲ, ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੀ ਸੀ,

When there was only the Pure, Formless Lord in Nirvaanaa,

ਉੱਥੇ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਬੇਇਜ਼ਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ?

then who was honored, and who was dishonored?

ਜਿਥੇ ਸਿਰਫ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਰੂਪ ਸੀ,

When there was only the Form of the Lord of the Universe,

ਉੱਥੇ ਧੋਖਾ-ਫਰੇਬ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖਾਂਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ?

then who was tainted by fraud and sin?

ਜਿਥੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਰੂਪ ਆਪਦੇ ਨੂਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ,

When the Embodiment of Light was immersed in His Own Light,

ਤਦ ਉਥੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਜ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ?

then who was hungry, and who was satisfied?

ਹੇਤੂਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੇਤੂ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ।

He is the Cause of causes, the Creator Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਕਰਤਾਰ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਮਿਣਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the Creator is beyond calculation. ||4||

ਜਦ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁਤਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਸਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸੀ,

When His Glory was contained within Himself,

ਤਦ ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਦੋਸਤ, ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਕੌਣ ਸਨ?

then who was mother, father, friend, child or sibling?

ਜਿਥੇ ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਹਿਰ ਸੀ,

When all power and wisdom was latent within Him,

ਉਥੋ ਤਦ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਵੇਦ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਸੀ?

then where were the Vedas and the scriptures, and who was there to read them?

ਜਦ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਸੀ,

When He kept Himself, All-in-all, unto His Own Heart,

ਤਦੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਅਤੇ ਅਸ਼ੁਭ ਲਗਨਾ ਦਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਿਆਲ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ।

then who considered omens to be good or bad?

ਜਿਥੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਨੀਵਾ ਸੀ,

When He Himself was lofty, and He Himself was near at hand,

ਉਥੇ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਤੇ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਨੌਕਰ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ?

then who was called master, and who was called disciple?

ਮੈਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਅਦਭੁਤਤਾ ਉਤੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।

We are wonder-struck at the wondrous wonder of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ।

O Nanak, He alone knows His own state. ||5||

ਜਿਥੇ ਨਾਂ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ, ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਜਾਣ ਰਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਭੇਤ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਦੇ ਆਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਸੀ,

When the Undeceiveable, Impenetrable, Inscrutable One was self-absorbed,

ਉਥੇ ਮੌਹਣੀ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੀ?

then who was swayed by Maya?

ਜਦ ਖੁਦ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ,

When He paid homage to Himself,

ਤਦ ਤਿੰਨੇ ਲੱਛਣ ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।

then the three qualities were not prevailing.

ਜਿਥੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਅਦੁੱਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੀ,

When there was only the One, the One and Only Lord God,

ਉੱਥੇ ਕੌਣ ਬੇਫਿਕਰ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਕਰ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ?

then who was not anxious, and who felt anxiety?

ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਲ ਖੁਦ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਸੀ,

When He Himself was satisfied with Himself,

ਉੱਥੇ ਕੌਣ ਕਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੀ?

then who spoke and who listened?

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਮ ਅਨੰਤ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਲੰਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਂ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਹੈ।

He is vast and infinite, the highest of the high.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, He alone can reach Himself. ||6||

ਜਦ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੇ ਖੁਦ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਾਜੇ,

When He Himself fashioned the visible world of the creation,

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਹਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਸੁਭਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ (ਅਧੀਨ) ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

he made the world subject to the three dispositions.

ਬਦੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਤਦ ਕਹੌਤ ਆਰੰਭ ਹੋਈ।

Sin and virtue then began to be spoken of.
