Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਕੋਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

No one can measure Your Worth, or describe You.

ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Those who describe You, remain absorbed in You. ||1||

ਹੇ ਮੈਡੇਂ ਅਥਾਹ ਡੂੰਘਾਈ ਵਾਲੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਤੂੰ ਉਤਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਤਾਈਆਂ (ਗੁਣਾਂ) ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ।

O my Great Lord and Master of Unfathomable Depth, You are the Ocean of Excellence.

ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

No one knows the greatness of Your expanse. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।

All the contemplators met together and practiced contemplation;

ਸਮੂਹ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।

all the appraisers met together and tried to appraise You.

ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮਬੇਤਿਆਂ, ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਕਾਂ ਦਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

The theologians, the meditators and the teachers of teachers

(ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ) ਉਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਭੋਰਾ ਭਰ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਸ ਸਕਦੇ।

could not express even an iota of Your Greatness. ||2||

ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਚਾਈਆਂ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕਰੜੀਆਂ ਘਾਲਣਾ, ਸਮੂਹ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ,

All Truth, all austerities, all goodness,

ਅਤੇ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਹਾਨਤਾਈਆਂ,

and the greatness of the Siddhas, the beings of perfect spiritual powers

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਐਸੀਆਂ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ।

without You, none has attained such spiritual powers.

ਤੇਰੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਹਾਉ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।

They are obtained by Your Grace; their flow cannot be blocked. ||3||

ਉਚਾਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

What can the helpless speaker do?

ਤੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਕੀਰਤੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਲਬਾਲਬ ਹਨ।

Your bounties are overflowing with Your Praises.

ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੋਰ ਜ਼ਈਏ (ਸਾਧਨ) ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰੇ?

And the one, unto whom You give - why should he think of any other?

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਸ਼ੋਭਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the True Lord is the Embellisher. ||4||1||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਵੰਝਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

Chanting the Name, I live; forgetting it, I die.

ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ।

It is so difficult to chant the True Name.

ਜੇਕਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਖੁਦਿਆ ਲਗ ਜਾਵੇ,

If someone feels hunger for the True Name,

ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਭੁਖ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੁਖੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

then that hunger shall consume his pains. ||1||

ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ?

So how could I ever forget Him, O my Mother?

ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਮ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

True is the Master, and True is His Name. ||1||Pause||

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਛਿਨ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਬਜੁਰਗੀ ਨੂੰ,

People have grown weary of trying to appraise the greatness of the True Name,

ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਰ ਹੁਟ ਗਏ ਹਨ; ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ।

But they have not been able to appraise even an iota of it.

ਜੇਕਰ ਸਮੂਹ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਰਸੰਸਾ ਕਰਨ,

Even if they were all to meet together and recount them,

ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ, ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਘਟ।

You would not be made any greater or lesser. ||2||

ਉਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He does not die - there is no reason to mourn.

ਉਹ ਦੇਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਨ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁਕਦੇ।

He continues to give, but His Provisions are never exhausted.

ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਖੂਬੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।

This Glorious Virtue is His alone - no one else is like Him;

ਨਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

there has never been anyone like Him, and there never shall be. ||3||

ਜਿੱਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ! ਓਡੀਆਂ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਬਖਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ।

As Great as You Yourself are, so Great are Your Gifts.

ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਵੀ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੀਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ।

It is You who created day and night as well.

ਅਧਮ (ਨੀਵੇ, ਮੰਦੇ) ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Those who forget their Lord and Master are vile and despicable.

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਛੇਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੀਚ ਹਨ।

O Nanak, without the Name, people are wretched outcasts. ||4||2||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਜੇਕਰ ਭਿਖਾਰੀ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਸਦਾਅ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

If a beggar cries out at the door, the Master hears it in His Mansion.

ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਜਾਂ ਆਦਰ-ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦੇਣ ਜਾਂ ਧੱਕਾ ਮਾਰਨ ਦੀ।

Whether He receives him or pushes him away, it is the Gift of the Lord's Greatness. ||1||

ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਤ ਵਰਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਨਾਂ ਪੁਛ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Recognize the Lord's Light within all, and do not consider social class or status; there are no classes or castes in the world hereafter. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਈਂ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਹੀ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself acts, and He Himself inspires us to act.

ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਿਕਵਾ-ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤਾਂ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself considers our complaints.

ਜਦ ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ! ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,

Since You, O Creator Lord, are the Doer,

ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਤੇ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਧਰਾਵਾਂ?

why should I submit to the world? ||2||

ਤੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਹੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

You Yourself created and You Yourself give.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੰਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਜਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

You Yourself eliminate evil-mindedness;

ਜਦ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਸਦਕਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆ ਕੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

by Guru's Grace, You come to abide in our minds,

ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਅਤੇ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

and then, pain and darkness are dispelled from within. ||3||

ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਚ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਫੂਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself infuses love for the Truth.

ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸੱਚ ਪਰਦਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।

Unto others, the Truth is not bestowed.

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਕੋਲੋ, ਮਗਰੋਂ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦਾ।

If He bestows it upon someone, says Nanak, then, in the world hereafter, that person is not called to account. ||4||3||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਛੈਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਘੁੰਗਰੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਨੰਦ ਹਨ,

The urges of the heart are like cymbals and ankle-bells;

ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਢੋਲ ਇਕ ਰਸ ਵੱਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

the drum of the world resounds with the beat.

ਨਾਰਦ ਵਰਗੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ, ਕਲਜੁਗ ਦੇ ਪਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਨੱਚ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

Naarad dances to the tune of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;

ਪ੍ਰਹੇਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰੱਖਣ?

where can the celibates and the men of truth place their feet? ||1||

ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਉਤੋਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਘੋਲੀ ਵੰਞਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak is a sacrifice to the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਛ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

The world is blind; our Lord and Master is All-seeing. ||1||Pause||

ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਗੋਂ, ਮੁਰੀਦ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

The disciple feeds on the Guru;

ਅਤੇ ਟੁੱਕਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home.
