Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਬਰਸ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ,

If one were to live and eat for hundreds of years,

ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਪਵੇਗਾ, ਜਦ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਆਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

that day alone would be auspicious, when he recognizes his Lord and Master. ||2||

ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।

Beholding the sight of the petitioner, compassion is not aroused.

ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਵੱਢੀ ਲੈਦਾ ਜਾਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

No one lives without give and take.

ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਓਦੋ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਉਸਦੀ ਤਲੀ ਤੇ ਕੁਛ ਧਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

The king administers justice only if his palm is greased.

ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਹ ਪਸੀਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

No one is moved by the Name of God. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਦਮੀ ਕੇਵਲ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਨ।

O Nanak, they are human beings in form and name only;

ਅਮਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਹਨ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ।

by their deeds they are dogs - this is the Command of the Lord's Court.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਜਾਣ ਲਵੇ,

By Guru's Grace, if one sees himself as a guest in this world,

ਤਦ ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੁਝ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

then he gains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||4||4||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਜਿੰਨੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਓਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਰਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ! ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਹਨ।

As much as the Shabad is in the mind, so much is Your melody; as much as the form of the universe is, so much is Your body, Lord.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਜੀਭਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨੱਕ, ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ। ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੀ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ।

You Yourself are the tongue, and You Yourself are the nose. Do not speak of any other, O my mother. ||1||

ਮੈਡਾਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੇਵਲ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ।

My Lord and Master is One;

ਉਹ ਸਰਫ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਵੀਰ, ਇੱਕੋ ਇਕ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

He is the One and Only; O Siblings of Destiny, He is the One alone. ||1||Pause||

ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਮਲੀਆਮੇਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself kills, and He Himself emancipates; He Himself gives and takes.

ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗ੍ਹਾ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself beholds, and He Himself rejoices; He Himself bestows His Glance of Grace. ||2||

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਝ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਕੁਛ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।

Whatever He is to do, that is what He is doing. No one else can do anything.

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਸਾਰੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਤਾ ਤੈਡੀਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ!

As He projects Himself, so do we describe Him; this is all Your Glorious Greatness, Lord. ||3||

ਕਲਜੁਗ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੀ ਮੱਟੀ ਹੈ। ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਖੀਵਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੀਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the bottle of wine; Maya is the sweet wine, and the intoxicated mind continues to drink it in.

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਖੁਦ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗਰੀਬੜਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself assumes all sorts of forms; thus poor Nanak speaks. ||4||5||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਅਕਲ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਾਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਬਣਾ।

Make your intellect your instrument, and love your tambourine;

ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਉਮਾਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

thus bliss and lasting pleasure shall be produced in your mind.

ਇਹ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਏਹੀ ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਦੀ ਸਾਧਣਾ।

This is devotional worship, and this is the practice of penance.

ਇਸ ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਤਕਾਰੀ ਕਰ।

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||1||

ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਲ ਸੁਰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣੀ ਸਮਝ,

Know that the perfect beat is the Praise of the Lord;

ਹੋਰ ਨਾਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

other dances produce only temporary pleasure in the mind. ||1||Pause||

ਆਪਣੇ ਛੈਣਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਸਬਰ-ਸਿਦਕ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰ।

Play the two cymbals of truth and contentment.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੁੰਗਰੂ ਬਣਾ।

Let your ankle bells be the lasting Vision of the Lord.

ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਰਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਗੀਤ ਸਮਝ।

Let your harmony and music be the elimination of duality.

ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰਤਕਾਰੀ ਕਰ।

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||2||

ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਕਰ ਕਟਣੇ ਬਣਾ,

Let the fear of God within your heart and mind be your spinning dance,

ਬੈਠਦਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਖਲੋਦਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ।

and keep up, whether sitting or standing.

ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਭਸਮ ਜਾਨਣਾ ਹੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁਲਣਾ ਹੈ।

To roll around in the dust is to know that the body is only ashes.

ਐਹੋ ਜਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅੰਦਰ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰਤਕਾਰੀ ਕਰ।

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||3||

ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਚੇਲੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੰਡਲੀ ਹੋਵੇ।

Keep the company of the disciples, the students who love the teachings.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰ।

As Gurmukh, listen to the True Name.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਤੂੰ ਬਾਰੰਬਾਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ।

O Nanak, chant it, over and over again.

ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰਤਕਾਰੀ ਕਰ।

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||4||6||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

ਹਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਥਾਪਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਅੱਗ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਯਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ।

He created the air, and He supports the whole world; he bound water and fire together.

ਦਸਾਂ ਸੀਸਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਰਾਵਣ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੀਸ ਕਟਵਾ ਲਏ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾ ਲਈ?

The blind, ten-headed Raavan had his heads cut off, but what greatness was obtained by killing him? ||1||

ਤੇਰੀ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ, ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਕਹੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?

What Glories of Yours can be chanted?

ਤੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰੀਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਤੂਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

You are totally pervading everywhere; You love and cherish all. ||1||Pause||

ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਣੀ ਬਹਿਣੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਫੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਕਾਲੇ ਸਰਪ ਦੇ ਨੱਕ-ਨਕੇਲ ਪਾ ਕੇ, ਕਿਹੜੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ?

You created all beings, and You hold the world in Your Hands; what greatness is it to put a ring in the nose of the black cobra, as Krishna did?

ਤੂੰ ਕੀਹਦਾ ਖ਼ਸਮ ਹੈਂ? ਕਿਹੜੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਆਖੀ ਜਾਣੀ ਹੈ? ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕਰਸ ਰਮ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।

Whose Husband are You? Who is Your wife? You are subtly diffused and pervading in all. ||2||

ਮੁਰਾਦਾਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਰ ਸਮੇਤ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਮਲੂਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੰਵਲ ਦੀ ਨਲਕੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਿਆ।

Brahma, the bestower of blessings, entered the stem of the lotus, with his relatives, to find the extent of the universe.

ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਓੜਕ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਾਂ ਲੱਗਾ। ਕੰਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ?

Proceeding on, he could not find its limits; what glory was obtained by killing Kansa, the king? ||3||

ਦੁਧ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਰਿੜਕਿਆਂ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਕਢੇ ਗਏ। ਦੇਵਤੇ ਤੇ ਦੈਂਤ ਹੋਰ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੱਜ ਉਠੇ ਕਿ "ਅਸਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।"

The jewels were produced and brought forth by churning the ocean of milk. The other gods proclaimed We are the ones who did this!
