Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ।

The Guru's Teachings are useful to my soul. ||1||

ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਤੀਜ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

Chanting the Lord's Name in this way, my mind is satisfied.

ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਦੇ ਸੁਰਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖ ਮਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਿੰਞਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

I have obtained the ointment of spiritual wisdom, recognizing the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause||

ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ ਇਕ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੀ ਪਰਮ ਅਨੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।

Blended with the One Lord, I enjoy intuitive peace.

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਹਿਮ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Through the Immaculate Bani of the Word, my doubts have been dispelled.

ਮੋਹਨੀ ਦੀ ਰਤੀ ਭਾਹ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਗੁਲਾਨਾਰੀ ਰੰਗਤ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ।

Instead of the pale color of Maya, I am imbued with the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love.

ਜਦ ਮਾਲਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿੱਗ੍ਹਾ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਦੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

By the Lord's Glance of Grace, the poison has been eliminated. ||2||

ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੋੜਾ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਤੇ ਜੀਉਂਦੇਂ ਜੀ ਮਰ ਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਜਾਗ ਉਠਿਆ।

When I turned away, and became dead while yet alive, I was awakened.

ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਗਈ।

Chanting the Word of the Shabad, my mind is attached to the Lord.

ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਅਤੇ ਪਰੇ ਸੁਟ ਕੇ, ਮੈਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

I have gathered in the Lord's sublime essence, and cast out the poison.

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਭਜ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Abiding in His Love, the fear of death has run away. ||3||

ਮੇਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਸੁਆਦ, ਬਖੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਊਮੇ ਮੁਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ,

My taste for pleasure ended, along with conflict and egotism.

ਅਨੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

My consciousness is attuned to the Lord, by the Order of the Infinite.

ਮੇਰੇ ਲੋਕ-ਲੱਜਾ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

My pursuit for worldy pride and honour is over.

ਜਦ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਮੈਂ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੀ ਠੰਢ-ਚੈਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾ ਲਿਆ।

When He blessed me with His Glance of Grace, peace was established in my soul. ||4||

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ।

Without You, I see no friend at all.

ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹਦੀ ਮੈਂ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਸਮਰਪਨ ਕਰਾਂ?

Whom should I serve? Unto whom should I dedicate my consciousness?

ਮੈਂ ਕੀਹਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਵਾਂ?

Whom should I ask? At whose feet should I fall?

ਕੀਹਦੀ ਸਿਖ-ਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?

By whose teachings will I remain absorbed in His Love? ||5||

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਂ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

I serve the Guru, and I fall at the Guru's Feet.

ਮੈਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ।

I worship Him, and I am absorbed in the Lord's Name.

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼, ਰੱਬੀ ਗੋਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੈ।

The Lord's Love is my instruction, sermon and food.

ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।

Enjoined to the Lord's Command, I have entered the home of my inner self. ||6||

ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਨਵਿਰਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਮ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

With the extinction of pride, my soul has found peace and meditation.

ਰੱਬੀ ਨੂਰ ਉਂਦੇ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਪਰਮ ਨੂਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

The Divine Light has dawned, and I am absorbed in the Light.

ਅਨੰਤ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਮੇਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਝੰਡਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।

Pre-ordained destiny cannot be erased; the Shabad is my banner and insignia.

ਮੈਂ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਰਚਣਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਰਚਨਾ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ।

I know the Creator, the Creator of His Creation. ||7||

ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨਾਂ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ, ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰ ਜਾਂ ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਹੈ,

I am not a learned Pandit, I am not clever or wise.

ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਰਾਹੋਂ ਅੋਟਲਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆਂ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਸ਼ੱਕ-ਸ਼ੁਭੇ ਦਾ ਗੁਮਰਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

I do not wander; I am not deluded by doubt.

ਮੈਂ ਵਿਹਲੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

I do not speak empty speech; I have recognized the Hukam of His Command.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Nanak is absorbed in intuitive peace through the Guru's Teachings. ||8||1||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ, ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ।

Gauree Gwaarayree, First Mehl:

ਦੇਹਿ ਦੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਨੂਆਂ ਇਕ ਹਾਥੀ ਹੈ।

The mind is an elephant in the forest of the body.

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹਾਥੀ ਉਤੇ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,

The Guru is the controlling stick; when the Insignia of the True Shabad is applied,

ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

One obtains honor in the Court of God the King. ||1||

ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਮਾਲਕ) ਜਾਣਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।

He cannot be known through clever tricks.

(ਮਨੂਏ ਨੂੰ) ਜਿੱਤਣ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

Without subduing the mind, how can His value be estimated? ||1||Pause||

ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਬਿ-ਹਿਯਾਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਲਈ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

In the house of the self is the Ambrosial Nectar, which is being stolen by the thieves.

ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖਦਾ।

No one can say no to them.

ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਬਿ-ਹਿਯਾਤ ਦੀ ਰਖਵਾਲੀ ਕਰੇ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਖੁਦ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।

He Himself protects us, and blesses us with greatness. ||2||

ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਅਰਬਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਨਗਿਣਤ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਅਰਬਾਂ ਖ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਗਾਂ, ਚਿੱਤ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਨ,

There are billions, countless billions of fires of desire at the seat of the mind.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਬੋਧ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

They are extinguished only with the water of understanding, imparted by the Guru.

ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਭੇਟਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

Offering my mind, I have attained it, and I joyfully sing His Glorious Praises. ||3||

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੈ।

Just as He is within the home of the self, so is He beyond.

ਕੰਦਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?

But how can I describe Him, sitting in a cave?

ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਨਿਡੱਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਸਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ।

The Fearless Lord is in the oceans, just as He is in the mountains. ||4||

ਦੱਸੋ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਅਗੇ ਹੀ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ?

Tell me, who can kill someone who is already dead?

ਕਿਹੜਾ ਭੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਇਨਸਾਨ, ਭੈ-ਰਹਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਡਰਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

What does he fear? Who can frighten the fearless one?

ਉਹ ਤਿੰਨਾ ਹੀ ਜਹਾਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਞਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

He recognizes the Word of the Shabad, throughout the three worlds. ||5||

ਜੋ ਕੇਵਲ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਿਰਾਪੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਅਖਾਣ ਹੀ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

One who speaks, merely describes speech.

ਜੋ ਦਰਅਸਲ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਈਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

But one who understands, intuitively realizes.

ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਚਣ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲ ਹਿਲ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

Seeing and reflecting upon it, my mind surrenders. ||6||

ਨੇਕ ਨਾਮੀ, ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ।

Praise, beauty and liberation are in the One Name.

ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

In it, the Immaculate Lord is permeating and pervading.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਧਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ, ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ।

He dwells in the home of the self, and in His own sublime place. ||7||

ਪਰਸੰਸਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਈ ਮੁਨੀਸ਼ਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਦਰ।

The many silent sages lovingly praise Him.
