ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀ।

Ashtapadee:

ਜਿਥੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅੰਮੜੀ, ਬਾਬਲ, ਪੁਤ੍ਰ, ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਅਤੇ ਵੀਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿਸਣੇ,

Where there is no mother, father, children, friends or siblings

ਉਥੇ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਵਜੋਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

O my mind, there, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be with you as your help and support.

ਜਿਥੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦਰੜੇਗਾ,

Where the great and terrible Messenger of Death shall try to crush you,

ਉਥੇ ਸਿਰਫ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਏਗਾ।

there, only the Naam shall go along with you.

ਜਿਥੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਔਕੜ ਬਣੇਗੀ,

Where the obstacles are so very heavy,

ਉਥੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲਏਗਾ।

the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਸਚਿਤ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।

By performing countless religious rituals, you shall not be saved.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਨਾਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੋ ਸੁੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Name of the Lord washes off millions of sins.

ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ।

As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, O my mind.

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇੰਜ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਰਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਣਗੇ।

O Nanak, you shall obtain countless joys. ||1||

ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੈ।

The rulers of the all the world are unhappy;

ਪਰ ਜੋ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

one who chants the Name of the Lord becomes happy.

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਜੂੜਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਕੜਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ,

Acquiring hundreds of thousands and millions, your desires shall not be contained.

ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall find release.

ਧੰਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਲੇਰੀਆਂ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ।

By the countless pleasures of Maya, your thirst shall not be quenched.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall be satisfied.

ਜਿਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਇਹ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਕੱਲਮਕੱਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

Upon that path where you must go all alone,

ਉਥੇ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਰਾਮ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

there, only the Lord's Name shall go with you to sustain you.

ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀਏ!

On such a Name, O my mind, meditate forever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, as Gurmukh, you shall obtain the state of supreme dignity. ||2||

ਜਿਥੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਦਾ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਭੁਜਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ,

You shall not be saved by hundreds of thousands and millions of helping hands.

ਉਥੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਇਕ-ਦਮ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Chanting the Naam, you shall be lifted up and carried across.

ਜਿਥੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੁਰਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਆ ਕੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,

Where countless misfortunes threaten to destroy you,

ਉਥੇ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਕ ਦਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.

ਆਦਮੀ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ,

Through countless incarnations, people are born and die.

ਪਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall come to rest in peace.

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਲੀਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਗੰਦਗੀ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।

The ego is polluted by a filth which can never be washed off.

ਪਰ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਨਾਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Name of the Lord erases millions of sins.

ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰ।

Chant such a Name with love, O my mind.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਇਹ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, it is obtained in the Company of the Holy. ||3||

ਜਿਸ ਪੰਧ ਦੇ ਮੀਲ ਗਿਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ,

On that path where the miles cannot be counted,

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਥੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਫਰ-ਖਰਚ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

there, the Name of the Lord shall be your sustenance.

ਜਿਸ ਸਫਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡਾ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰ-ਘੁੱਪ ਹੈ,

On that journey of total, pitch-black darkness,

ਉਥੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

the Name of the Lord shall be the Light with you.

ਜਿਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣੂ ਨਹੀਂ,

On that journey where no one knows you,

ਉਥੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਥ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਨਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

with the Name of the Lord, you shall be recognized.

ਜਿਥੇ ਅਤੀ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਗਰਮੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਧੁੱਪ ਹੈ,

Where there is awesome and terrible heat and blazing sunshine,

ਉਥੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਛਾਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।

there, the Name of the Lord will give you shade.

ਜਿਥੇ ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਤਰੇਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਾਹ ਖਿੱਚਦੀ ਹੈ,

Where thirst, O my mind, torments you to cry out,

ਉਥੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਬਿ-ਹਿਯਾਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਵਰਸੇਗਾ।

there, O Nanak, the Ambrosial Name, Har, Har, shall rain down upon you. ||4||

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੁਰਾਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਹੈ।

Unto the devotee, the Naam is an article of daily use.

ਨੇਕ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਆਰਾਮ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The minds of the humble Saints are at peace.

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।

The Name of the Lord is the Support of His servants.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

By the Name of the Lord, millions have been saved.

ਸਾਧੂ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

The Saints chant the Praises of the Lord, day and night.

ਸੰਤ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ।

Har, Har - the Lord's Name - the Holy use it as their healing medicine.

ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨੌਕਰ ਦਾ, ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਹੈ।

The Lord's Name is the treasure of the Lord's servant.

ਪਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਵਜੋਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

The Supreme Lord God has blessed His humble servant with this gift.

ਸਾਧੂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।

Mind and body are imbued with ecstasy in the Love of the One Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਦੀ ਉਪਜੀਵਕਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, careful and discerning understanding is the way of the Lord's humble servant. ||5||

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਲਈ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ।

The Name of the Lord is the path of liberation for His humble servants.

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

With the food of the Name of the Lord, His servants are satisfied.

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ।

The Name of the Lord is the beauty and delight of His servants.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦੀ।

Chanting the Lord's Name, one is never blocked by obstacles.

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਫਰ ਦੀ ਪਤਿ ਆਬਰੂ ਹੈ।

The Name of the Lord is the glorious greatness of His servants.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Through the Name of the Lord, His servants obtain honor.
