ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ; ਜਨ ਕਉ ਭੋਗ ਜੋਗ ॥
har kaa naam; jan kau bhog jog |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਫ਼ਰ ਲਈ ਯੋਗ ਮਾਰਗ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੈਣਾ ਹੈ।
The Name of the Lord is the enjoyment and Yoga of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ; ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਬਿਓਗੁ ॥
har naam japat; kachh naeh biog |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
Chanting the Lord's Name, there is no separation from Him.
ਜਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ; ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
jan raataa; har naam kee sevaa |
ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
His servants are imbued with the service of the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਜੈ; ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੬॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਜਲੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, worship the Lord, the Lord Divine, Har, Har. ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ; ਮਾਲੁ ਖਜੀਨਾ ॥

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਲਈ ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord's Name, Har, Har, is the treasure of wealth of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ; ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥
har dhan jan kau; aap prabh deenaa |
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਾਈਂ ਨੇ ਖੁਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਮਾਸ਼ਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
The treasure of the Lord has been bestowed on His servants by God Himself.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ; ਓਟ ਸਤਾਣੀ ॥
har har jan kai; ott sataanee |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੌਕਰ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਜ਼ਬਰਦਸਤ ਪਨਾਹ ਹੈ।
The Lord, Har, Har is the All-powerful Protection of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ; ਜਨ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
har prataap; jan avar na jaanee |
ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਤਪ ਤੇਜ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
His servants know no other than the Lord's Magnificence.
ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ; ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
ot pot; jan har ras raate |
ਤਾਣੇ ਪੇਟੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਨਿੰਦ, ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Through and through, His servants are imbued with the Lord's Love.
ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ; ਨਾਮ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ॥
sun samaadh; naam ras maate |
ਅਫੁਰ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਜੌਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
In deepest Samaadhi, they are intoxicated with the essence of the Naam.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ; ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ॥
aatth pehar; jan har har japai |
ਦਿਨ ਦੇ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਿਰ ਹੀ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Twenty-four hours a day, His servants chant Har, Har.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ; ਨਹੀ ਛਪੈ ॥
har kaa bhagat pragatt; nahee chhapai |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਉਘਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
The devotees of the Lord are known and respected; they do not hide in secrecy.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ; ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੇ ॥
har kee bhagat; mukat bahu kare |
ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਖਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Through devotion to the Lord, many have been liberated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ; ਕੇਤੇ ਤਰੇ ॥੭॥
naanak jan sang; kete tare |7|
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
O Nanak, along with His servants, many others are saved. ||7||
ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਇਹੁ; ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥
paarajaat ihu; har ko naam |
ਇਹ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਲਪ-ਬਿਰਛ ਹੈ।
This Elysian Tree of miraculous powers is the Name of the Lord.
ਕਾਮਧੇਨ; ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥
kaamadhen; har har gun gaam |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਾਂ ਹੈ।
The Khaamadhayn, the cow of miraculous powers, is the singing of the Glory of the Lord's Name, Har, Har.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ; ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ॥
sabh te aootam; har kee kathaa |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਗੋਸ਼ਟ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ।
Highest of all is the Lord's Speech.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਤ; ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਲਥਾ ॥
naam sunat; darad dukh lathaa |
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੀੜ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਮ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Hearing the Naam, pain and sorrow are removed.
ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ; ਸੰਤ ਰਿਦ ਵਸੈ ॥
naam kee mahimaa; sant rid vasai |
ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
The Glory of the Naam abides in the hearts of His Saints.
ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ; ਦੁਰਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਨਸੈ ॥
sant prataap; durat sabh nasai |
ਸਾਧੂ ਦੇ ਤਪ ਤੇਜ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਾਪ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
By the Saint's kind intervention, all guilt is dispelled.
ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ; ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sant kaa sang; vaddabhaagee paaeeai |
ਸਾਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਪਰਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਸੀਬਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The Society of the Saints is obtained by great good fortune.
ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ; ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
sant kee sevaa; naam dhiaaeeai |
ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Serving the Saint, one meditates on the Naam.
ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ; ਕਛੁ ਅਵਰੁ. ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam tul; kachh avar. na hoe |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੈ ਨਹੀਂ।
There is nothing equal to the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ; ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak guramukh; naam paavai jan koe |8|2|
ਨਾਨਕ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, rare are those, who, as Gurmukh, obtain the Naam. ||8||2||

ਬੜੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਘਣੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਤੀਆਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
The many Shaastras and the many Simritees - I have seen and searched through them all.
ਪੂਜਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ. ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ; ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਮੋਲ ॥੧॥

ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁਜਦੇ।
They are not equal to Har, Haray - O Nanak, the Lord's Invaluable Name. ||1||

ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ; ਗਿਆਨ ਸਭਿ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
jaap taap; giaan sabh dhiaan |
ਧਾਰਮਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਾਚਣ, ਤਪੱਸਿਆਂ, ਮਜ਼ਹਬੀ ਗੋਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੋਚ-ਵਿਚਾਰ।
Chanting, intense meditation, spiritual wisdom and all meditations;
ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ; ਸਿਮਿ੍ਰਤਿ ਵਖਿਆਨ ॥
khatt saasatr; simrit vakhiaan |
ਛੇ ਫਲਸਫੇ ਦੋ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡੀ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ।
the six schools of philosophy and sermons on the scriptures;
ਜੋਗ ਅਭਿਆਸ; ਕਰਮ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
jog abhiaas; karam dhram kiriaa |
ਯੋਗ ਦਾ ਸਾਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਜ਼ਹਬੀ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਰਨਾ।
the practice of Yoga and righteous conduct;
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ; ਬਨ ਮਧੇ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
sagal tiaag; ban madhe firiaa |
ਹਰ ਵਸਤੂ ਦਾ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ।
the renunciation of everything and wandering around in the wilderness;
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ; ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨਾ ॥
anik prakaar; kee bahu jatanaa |
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਕਰਨਾ।
the performance of all sorts of works;
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ; ਹੋਮੇ ਬਹੁ ਰਤਨਾ ॥
pun daan; home bahu ratanaa |
ਖੈਰਾਤ ਦੇਣੀ, ਅੱਗ ਦੀ ਆਹੁਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਣੇ ਜਵਾਹਿਰਾਤ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ।
donations to charities and offerings of jewels to fire;
ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਇ; ਹੋਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
sareer kattaae; homai kar raatee |
ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾ ਛੋਟੇ ਟੁਕੜਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੱਟਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਹੁਤੀ ਦੇਣੀ।
cutting the body apart and making the pieces into ceremonial fire offerings;
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੈ; ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
varat nem karai; bahu bhaatee |
ਘਣੇਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਹਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਤੱਗਿਆ ਨਿਭਾਉਣੀਆਂ।
keeping fasts and making vows of all sorts
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ; ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
nahee tul; raam naam beechaar |
ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।
- none of these are equal to the contemplation of the Name of the Lord,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ; ਜਪੀਐ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥
naanak guramukh naam; japeeai ik baar |1|
ਨਾਨਕ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤਾਬੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਦਫ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ।
O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants the Naam, even once. ||1||
ਨਉ ਖੰਡ ਪਿ੍ਰਥਮੀ ਫਿਰੈ; ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
nau khandd prithamee firai; chir jeevai |
ਇਨਸਾਨ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਨੌ ਖਿੱਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੌਦਾ ਫਿਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਬੜੀ ਦੇਰ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ।
You may roam over the nine continents of the world and live a very long life;
ਮਹਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ; ਤਪੀਸਰੁ ਥੀਵੈ ॥
mahaa udaas; tapeesar theevai |
ਉਹ ਭਾਰਾ ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਤੇ ਤਪੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ,
you may become a great ascetic and a master of disciplined meditation
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ; ਹੋਮਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
agan maeh; homat paraan |
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਵੇ।
and burn yourself in fire;
ਕਨਿਕ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਹੈਵਰ; ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨ ॥
kanik asv haivar; bhoom daan |
ਉਹ ਸੋਨੇ, ਘੋੜੇ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਜਮੀਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ।
you may give away gold, horses, elephants and land;
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਆਸਨ ॥
niaulee karam karai bahu aasan |
ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਧੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਢੰਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ।
you may practice techniques of inner cleansing and all sorts of Yogic postures;
ਜੈਨ ਮਾਰਗ; ਸੰਜਮ ਅਤਿ ਸਾਧਨ ॥
jain maarag; sanjam at saadhan |
ਉਹ ਜੈਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਿਆਜ਼ਤ ਦੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਰੜੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਕਰਮ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ।
you may adopt the self-mortifying ways of the Jains and great spiritual disciplines;
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਕਰਿ; ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਵੈ ॥
nimakh nimakh kar; sareer kattaavai |
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਰਾ ਭੋਰਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਵਢਵਾ ਲਵੇ।
piece by piece, you may cut your body apart;
ਤਉ ਭੀ; ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ. ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
tau bhee; haumai mail. na jaavai |
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
but even so, the filth of your ego shall not depart.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ; ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
har ke naam samasar; kachh naeh |
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ।
There is nothing equal to the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ; ਗਤਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

ਨਾਨਕ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, chant the Naam, and obtain salvation. ||2||
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ; ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਹ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
man kaamanaa; teerath deh chhuttai |
ਕਈ ਇੱਛਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਚੋਲਾ ਛਡਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ,
With your mind filled with desire, you may give up your body at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage;
ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ; ਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹੁਟੈ ॥
garab gumaan; na man te huttai |
ਪਰ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।
but even so, egotistical pride shall not be removed from your mind.
ਸੋਚ ਕਰੈ; ਦਿਨਸੁ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
soch karai; dinas ar raat |
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਦਿਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ,
You may practice cleansing day and night,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ; ਨ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
man kee mail; na tan te jaat |
ਪਰ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਨਤਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
but the filth of your mind shall not leave your body.
ਇਸੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਉ; ਬਹੁ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
eis dehee kau; bahu saadhanaa karai |
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੰਜਮ ਪਿਆ ਕਮਾਵੇ,
You may subject your body to all sorts of disciplines,
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂ; ਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਟਰੈ ॥
man te kabahoo; na bikhiaa ttarai |
ਤਦਯਪ ਮੰਦੇ ਵੇਗ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛਡਦੇ।
but your mind will never be rid of its corruption.
ਜਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਬਹੁ; ਦੇਹ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
jal dhovai bahu; deh aneet |
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਬੰਦਾ ਇਸ ਆਰਜੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਘਣੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਫ ਕਰੇ,
You may wash this transitory body with loads of water,
ਸੁਧ ਕਹਾ ਹੋਇ; ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
sudh kahaa hoe; kaachee bheet |
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਕੱਚੀ ਕੰਧ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਫ ਸੁਥਰੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
but how can a wall of mud be washed clean?
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ; ਮਹਿਮਾ ਊਚ ॥
man har ke naam kee; mahimaa aooch |
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਹੈ।
O my mind, the Glorious Praise of the Name of the Lord is the highest;
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ; ਪਤਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਮੂਚ ॥੩॥
naanak naam udhare; patit bahu mooch |3|
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਾਰੇ ਪਾਪੀ ਬਚਾ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
O Nanak, the Naam has saved so many of the worst sinners. ||3||
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ; ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
bahut siaanap; jam kaa bhau biaapai |
ਘਨੇਰੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਆ ਚਿਮੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
Even with great cleverness, the fear of death clings to you.
