Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਤੀਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ।

So many lifetimes are wasted in these ways.

ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਆਪਣੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਕਰ।

Nanak: uplift them, and redeem them, O Lord - show Your Mercy! ||7||

ਤੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੈ।

You are our Lord and Master; to You, I offer this prayer.

ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਸਮੂਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹਨ।

This body and soul are all Your property.

ਤੂੰ ਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਓ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਾਂ।

You are our mother and father; we are Your children.

ਤੇਰੀ ਦਇਆਲਤਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਰਾਮ ਹਨ।

In Your Grace, there are so many joys!

ਤੇਰਾ ਓੜਕ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।

No one knows Your limits.

ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਧਨਾਢ ਸਾਹਿਬ! ਬੁਲੰਦਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਮ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਹੈ।

O Highest of the High, Most Generous God,

ਸਾਰੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਧਾਗੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰੋਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

the whole creation is strung on Your thread.

ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ।

That which has come from You is under Your Command.

ਆਪਣੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

You alone know Your state and extent.

ਤੇਰਾ ਗੋਲਾ, ਨਾਨਕ, ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ, ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੋਂ ਘੋਲੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak, Your slave, is forever a sacrifice. ||8||4||

ਸਲੋਕ।

Salok:

ਜੋ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਰਸਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who renounces God the Giver, and attaches himself to other affairs

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਕਿਧਰੇ ਭੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਗੁਆ ਲਵੇਗਾ।

- O Nanak, he shall never succeed. Without the Name, he shall lose his honor. ||1||

ਅਸ਼ਟਪਦੀ।

Ashtapadee:

ਆਦਮੀ ਦਸ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

He obtains ten things, and puts them behind him;

ਇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਖਾਤਰ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

for the sake of one thing withheld, he forfeits his faith.

ਜੇਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਭੀ ਨਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ, ਅਤੇ ਦੱਸ ਭੀ ਖੋਹ ਲਵੇ,

But what if that one thing were not given, and the ten were taken away?

ਤਦ ਦੱਸੋ ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

Then, what could the fool say or do?

ਜਿਸ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਜੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਲਦਾ,

Our Lord and Master cannot be moved by force.

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਕਰ।

Unto Him, bow forever in adoration.

ਸਾਰੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਦੇ ਹਨ,

That one, unto whose mind God seems sweet

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

all pleasures come to abide in his mind.

ਜਿਸ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਮੀਲ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who abides by the Lord's Will,

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਸਤੂਆਂ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, obtains all things. ||1||

ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

God the Banker gives endless capital to the mortal,

ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਪਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਖਰਚਦਾ ਹੈ।

who eats, drinks and expends it with pleasure and joy.

ਜੇਕਰ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰ, ਮਗਰੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਮਾਨਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਕੁ ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈ ਲਵੇ,

If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,

ਤਾਂ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੰਚ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

the ignorant person shows his anger.

ਆਪਣੇ ਅਮਲ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।

He himself destroys his own credibility,

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਮੁੜ ਉਸ ਤੇ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।

and he shall not again be trusted.

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਸਤੂ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਰੱਖਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ

When one offers to the Lord, that which belongs to the Lord,

ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਖਿੜੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਯੋਗ ਹੈ।

and willingly abides by the Will of God's Order,

ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਰ ਗੁਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰੇਗਾ।

the Lord will make him happy four times over.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ||2||

ਸਮਝ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਲਗਨਾਂ,

The many forms of attachment to Maya shall surely pass away

ਆਰਜੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚਿਤ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ।

- know that they are transitory.

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦਰਖਤ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ,

People fall in love with the shade of the tree,

ਜਦ ਉਹ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਫਸੋਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

and when it passes away, they feel regret in their minds.

ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਨਜਰੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉੱਡ ਪੁੱਡ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,

Whatever is seen, shall pass away;

ਤਾਂ ਵੀ, ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਮ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਬੰਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੰਮੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

and yet, the blindest of the blind cling to it.

ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਾਹੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

One who gives her love to a passing traveler

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਪੱਲੇ ਕੁਛ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ।

nothing shall come into her hands in this way.

ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀਏ! ਆਰਾਮ-ਬਖਸ਼ਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ।

O mind, the love of the Name of the Lord bestows peace.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਭਗਵਾਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the Lord, in His Mercy, unites us with Himself. ||3||

ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਦੇਹਿ, ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ।

False are body, wealth, and all relations.

ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਹੰਕਾਰ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ।

False are ego, possessiveness and Maya.

ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਰਾਜ ਭਾਗ, ਜੁਆਨੀ, ਮਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ।

False are power, youth, wealth and property.

ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ, ਮਥਨ-ਹੁਲਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਰੋਹ।

False are sexual desire and wild anger.

ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ, ਹਾਥੀ, ਘੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕਾਂ।

False are chariots, elephants, horses and expensive clothes.

ਕੂੜੀ ਹੈ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਹਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

False is the love of gathering wealth, and reveling in the sight of it.

ਕੂੜਾ ਹੈ ਵਲਛਲ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ।

False are deception, emotional attachment and egotistical pride.

ਕੂੜਾ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਤੇ ਗਰੂਰ ਕਰਨਾ।

False are pride and self-conceit.

ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹੈ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਾ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ।

Only devotional worship is permanent, and the Sanctuary of the Holy.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak lives by meditating, meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ||4||

ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ ਕੰਨ ਜੋ ਪਰਾਈ ਚੁਗਲੀ ਬਖੀਲੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ।

False are the ears which listen to the slander of others.

ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਹੱਥ ਜੋ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

False are the hands which steal the wealth of others.
