ਤੇਰੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਬਿਠਾਏ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੋਜਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ।

Are there to feed you as you rest.

ਇਹ ਨੇਕੀ-ਵਿਹੁਣ ਬੰਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ।

This worthless person has not appreciated in the least, all the good deeds done for him.

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਬੰਦ-ਖ਼ਲਾਸ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

If you bless him with forgiveness, O Nanak, only then will he be saved. ||1||

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਉਤੇ ਆਰਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,

By His Grace, you abide in comfort upon the earth.

ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਵੀਰਾਂ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਹਸਦਾ ਖੇਲ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ।

With your children, siblings, friends and spouse, you laugh.

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਂਦਾ,

By His Grace, you drink in cool water.

ਅਤੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਣਮੁੱਲੀ ਅੱਗ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ।

You have peaceful breezes and priceless fire.

ਇਸ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,

By His Grace, you enjoy all sorts of pleasures.

ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਲੋੜੀਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੈਆਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

You are provided with all the necessities of life.

ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੱਥ, ਪੈਰ, ਕੰਨ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਭਾ ਬਖਸ਼ੇ ਹਨ।

He gave you hands, feet, ears, eyes and tongue,

ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

and yet, you forsake Him and attach yourself to others.

ਇਹੋ ਜੇਹੇ ਪਾਪ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੰਮੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।

Such sinful mistakes cling to the blind fools;

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ!

Nanak: uplift and save them, God! ||2||

ਜੋ ਆਰੰਭ ਤੋਂ ਅਖੀਰ ਤੱਕ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,

From beginning to end, He is our Protector,

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਬੰਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।

and yet, the ignorant do not give their love to Him.

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਤੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ,

Serving Him, the nine treasures are obtained,

ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ।

and yet, the foolish do not link their minds with Him.

ਜੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਦੀਵ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਐਨ ਪਰਤੱਖ ਹੈ,

Our Lord and Master is Ever-present, forever and ever,

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਖਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

and yet, the spiritually blind believe that He is far away.

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੰਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਉਣੀ ਹੈ,

In His service, one obtains honor in the Court of the Lord,

ਬੇਸਮਝ, ਬੇਵਕੂਫ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

and yet, the ignorant fool forgets Him.

ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਬੰਦਾ ਗਲਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Forever and ever, this person makes mistakes;

ਨਾਨਕ, ਕੇਵਲ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the Infinite Lord is our Saving Grace. ||3||

ਮਾਣਕ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਕੌਡੀ ਨਾਲ ਖਚਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

Forsaking the jewel, they are engrossed with a shell.

ਉਹ ਰਾਸਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੂੜ ਨਾਲ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

They renounce Truth and embrace falsehood.

ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

That which passes away, they believe to be permanent.

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਹੋਣਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਦੁਰੇਡਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।

That which is immanent, they believe to be far off.

ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਉਹ ਤਕਲਫ਼ਿ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

They struggle for what they must eventually leave.

ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।

They turn away from the Lord, their Help and Support, who is always with them.

ਉਹ ਚੰਨਣ ਦੇ ਲੇਪਣ ਨੂੰ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਲਾਹ ਸੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ।

They wash off the sandalwood paste;

ਖੋਤੇ ਦਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਸੁਆਹ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।

like donkeys, they are in love with the mud.

ਬੰਦਾ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਖੂਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਿੱਗਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।

They have fallen into the deep, dark pit.

ਨਾਨਕ, ਹੈ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਮਾਲਕ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਧੂ ਲੈ।

Nanak: lift them up and save them, O Merciful Lord God! ||4||

ਉਹ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਸ਼ ਸ਼ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿੰਚੋਂ ਪਰ ਅਮਲ ਹਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡੰਗਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ।

They belong to the human species, but they act like animals.

ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਹਰਦਾਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

They curse others day and night.

ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਲਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਲਿਬਾਸ ਪਹਿਨੀ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਮੇਲ ਹੈ।

Outwardly, they wear religious robes, but within is the filth of Maya.

ਜਿੰਨਾ ਜੀ ਕਰੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਲੁਕਾਵੇ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।

They cannot conceal this, no matter how hard they try.

ਉਹ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਬੋਧ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਦਿਖਲਾਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Outwardly, they display knowledge, meditation and purification,

ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਲਚ ਦਾ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਚਿਮੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

but within clings the dog of greed.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਵਾਰ ਰਾਖ।

The fire of desire rages within; outwardly they apply ashes to their bodies.

ਆਪਣੀ ਗਰਦਨ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਅਤੀ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

There is a stone around their neck - how can they cross the unfathomable ocean?

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਖੁਦ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ,

Those, within whom God Himself abides

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

- O Nanak, those humble beings are intuitively absorbed in the Lord. ||5||

ਕੇਵਲ ਸੁਣਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਮੁਨਾਖਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

By listening, how can the blind find the path?

ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ ਫੜ ਲਓ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਤੇ ਪੁੱਜ ਜਾਏਗਾ।

Take hold of his hand, and then he can reach his destination.

ਬੋਲਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਤ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੁੱਝ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

How can a riddle be understood by the deaf?

ਜਦ ਅਸੀਂ ਰਾਤ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।

Say 'night', and he thinks you said 'day'.

ਗੁੰਗਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਗਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

How can the mute sing the Songs of the Lord?

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਉਪਰਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਟੁਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

He may try, but his voice will fail him.

ਲੰਗੜਾ ਪਹਾੜ ਉਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੱਕਰ ਕੱਟ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

How can the cripple climb up the mountain?

ਉਸ ਦਾ ਉਥੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੰਭਵ ਨਹੀਂ।

He simply cannot go there.

ਹੇ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦੇ ਪੁੰਜ, ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ, ਮੈਂ ਮਸਕੀਨ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,

O Creator, Lord of Mercy - Your humble servant prays;

ਕਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

Nanak: by Your Grace, please save me. ||6||

ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

The Lord, our Help and Support, is always with us, but the mortal does not remember Him.

ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵੈਰੀ ਹੈ।

He shows love to his enemies.

ਉਹ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੰਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

He lives in a castle of sand.

ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਤੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

He enjoys the games of pleasure and the tastes of Maya.

ਉਹ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੰਗਰਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਸਤਕਿਲ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦਾ ਯਕੀਨ।

He believes them to be permanent - this is the belief of his mind.

ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।

Death does not even come to mind for the fool.

ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨੀ, ਵਾਦ-ਵਿਵਾਦ, ਵਿਸ਼ੇਭੋਗ, ਗੁੱਸਾ, ਮਮਤਾ,

Hate, conflict, sexual desire, anger, emotional attachment,

ਕੂੜ, ਪਾਪ, ਪਰਮ ਲਾਲਚ ਅਤੇ ਛਲ-ਕਪਟ।
