ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ।

Gauree, Kabeer Jee:

ਆਤਮਕ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਆਰਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੌ ਸਕਦਾ।

In the darkness, no one can sleep in peace.

ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਗਾਲ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਇਕਸਾਰ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

The king and the pauper both weep and cry. ||1||

ਜਦ ਤਾਂਈ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ,

As long as the tongue does not chant the Lord's Name,

ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

the person continues coming and going in reincarnation, crying out in pain. ||1||Pause||

ਦੌਲਤ ਜੋ ਦਰਖਤ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਪਦੀ ਹੈ,

It is like the shadow of a tree;

ਦੱਸੋ ਖਾਂ! ਜਦ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਕੂਚ ਕਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕੀਹਦੀ ਹੋਏਗੀ?

when the breath of life passes out of the mortal being, tell me, what becomes of his wealth? ||2||

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸਾਜ਼ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਦੇਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ,

It is like the music contained in the instrument;

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਦੇ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

how can anyone know the secret of the dead? ||3||

ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਜ ਹੰਸ ਝੀਲ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਾਗੇ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੌਤ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਉਤੇ ਮੰਡਲਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Like the swan on the lake, death hovers over the body.

ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ!

Drink in the Lord's sweet elixir, Kabeer. ||4||8||

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ।

Gauree, Kabeer Jee:

ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਵਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਹੈ। ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮਨਸ਼ਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਲ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

The creation is born of the Light, and the Light is in the creation.

ਉਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਵੇ ਲਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇ ਕਿ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਹੀਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੱਚਾ ਕੱਚ।

It bears two fruits: the false glass and the true pearl. ||1||

ਉਹ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਬਿਨਾ ਡਰ ਦੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Where is that home, which is said to be free of fear?

ਜਿਥੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨਿੱਡਰ ਹੋ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

There, fear is dispelled and one lives without fear. ||1||Pause||

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।

On the banks of sacred rivers, the mind is not appeased.

ਚੰਗੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਉਲਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

People remain entangled in good and bad deeds. ||2||

ਗੁਣ ਅਤੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਦੋਨੋਂ ਇਕ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹਨ।

Sin and virtue are both the same.

ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਧਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਾਇਆ-ਪਲਟ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੱਥਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਖਿਆਲ ਛੱਡ ਦੇ।

In the home of your own being, is the Philosopher's Stone; renounce your search for any other virtue. ||3||

ਕਬੀਰ ਹੇ ਗੁਣ-ਵਿਹੁਣ ਬੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਨ ਰੁੱਸ।

Kabeer: O worthless mortal, do not lose the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਏਸ ਬਹਿਲਾਵੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਹਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖ।

Keep this mind of yours involved in this involvement. ||4||9||

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ।

Gauree, Kabeer Jee:

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਬੇ-ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਅਤੇ ਅਗਾਧ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ,

He claims to know the Lord, who is beyond measure and beyond thought;

ਉਹ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸਵਰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

by mere words, he plans to enter heaven. ||1||

ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਭਵਨ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਹੈ।

I do not know where heaven is.

ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਓਥੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Everyone claims that he plans to go there. ||1||Pause||

ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਤਸੱਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ,

By mere talk, the mind is not appeased.

ਜਦ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

The mind is only appeased, when egotism is conquered. ||2||

ਜਦ ਤਾਂਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਰਗ ਦੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਹੈ,

As long as the mind is filled with the desire for heaven,

ਓਦੋਂ ਤਾਂਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

he does not dwell at the Lord's Feet. ||3||

ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਸਾਂ,

Says Kabeer, unto whom should I tell this?

ਕਿ ਸਤਿ ਸੰਗਤ ਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਹੈ।

The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is heaven. ||4||10||

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ।

Gauree, Kabeer Jee:

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

We are born, and we grow, and having grown, we pass away.

ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਜਗ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

Before our very eyes, this world is passing away. ||1||

ਤੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ।

How can you not die of shame, claiming, This world is mine?

ਅਖੀਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

At the very last moment, nothing is yours. ||1||Pause||

ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਉਪਰਾਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਾਲਿਆ ਪੋਸਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

Trying various methods, you cherish your body,

ਪਰ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਹ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਾੜ ਦਿਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

but at the time of death, it is burned in the fire. ||2||

ਉਹ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਚੰਨਣ ਦਾ ਅਤਰ ਮਲਦਾ ਹੈਂ,

You apply sandalwood oil to your limbs,

ਲੱਕੜੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਚ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

but that body is burned with the firewood. ||3||

ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣੋ, ਹੇ ਨੇਕ ਬੰਦਿਓ!

Says Kabeer, listen, O virtuous people:

ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗੀ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਹਾਨ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੋਏਗਾ।

your beauty shall vanish, as the whole world watches. ||4||11||

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ।

Gauree, Kabeer Jee:

ਜਦ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ?

Why do you cry and mourn, when another person dies?

ਤਾਂ ਕਰ, ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਜੀਊਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ।

Do so only if you yourself are to live. ||1||

ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਾਂਗਾ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਗ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

I shall not die as the rest of the world dies,

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ, ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

for now I have met the life-giving Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਹਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ

People anoint their bodies with fragrant oils,

ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਮਹਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

and in that pleasure, they forget the supreme bliss. ||2||

ਖੂਹ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜ ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।

There is one well, and five water-carriers.

ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਰੱਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Even though the rope is broken, the fools continue trying to draw water. ||3||

ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸੋਚ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

Says Kabeer, through contemplation, I have obtained this one understanding.

ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਹੁਣ, ਨਾਂ ਉਹ ਖੂਹ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ।

There is no well, and no water-carrier. ||4||12||

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ।

Gauree, Kabeer Jee:

ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਲੱਤਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਵ, ਕੀੜੇ ਮਕੌੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਨੇ,

The mobile and immobile creatures, insects and moths

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸ਼ਕਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

- in numerous lifetimes, I have passed through those many forms. ||1||
