Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਧਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਥੇ ਰੱਖ, ਜਿਥੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

Says Nanak, He grants life to the living beings; O Lord, please keep me according to Your Will. ||5||19||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨ, ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਤੀ, ਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਨੇਊ,

Let the body be the Brahmin, and let the mind be the loin-cloth;

ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਧਿਆਨ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਨੂੰ ਦੱਭ ਦੇ ਪੱਤੇ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

let spiritual wisdom be the sacred thread, and meditation the ceremonial ring.

ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

I seek the Name of the Lord and His Praise as my cleansing bath.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਸਦਕਾ, ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ।

By Guru's Grace, I am absorbed into God. ||1||

ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਐਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ,

O Pandit, O religious scholar, contemplate God in such a way

ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ ਹੋਵੇ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

that His Name may sanctify you, that His Name may be your study, and His Name your wisdom and way of life. ||1||Pause||

ਬਾਹਰਲਾ ਜੰਞੂ ਤਦ ਤਾਂਈ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਤੋੜੀਂ ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ।

The outer sacred thread is worthwhile only as long as the Divine Light is within.

ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਤੇੜ ਦੀ ਚਾਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਤਿਲਕ ਬਣਾ।

So make the remembrance of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, your loin-cloth and the ceremonial mark on your forehead.

ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਏਥੇ ਅਤੇ ਓਥੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੱਖ ਪੂਰੇਗਾ।

Here and hereafter, the Name alone shall stand by you.

ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਹੋਰਸ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਭਾਲ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ।

Do not seek any other actions, except the Name. ||2||

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਿਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਸੁੱਟ।

Worship the Lord in loving adoration, and burn your desire for Maya.

ਕੇਵਲ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ, ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਤਲਾਸ਼ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ।

Behold only the One Lord, and do not seek out any other.

ਦਸਵੇਂ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ,

Become aware of reality, in the Sky of the Tenth Gate;

ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਵਾਰਤਾ ਵਾਚ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਚ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕਰ।

read aloud the Lord's Word, and contemplate it. ||3||

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੀ ਖੁਰਾਕ ਨਾਲ ਵਹਿਮ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

With the diet of His Love, doubt and fear depart.

ਜੇਕਰ ਰੋਹਬ ਦਾਬ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੰਤਰੀ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਚੋਰ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ।

With the Lord as your night watchman, no thief will dare to break in.

ਇਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਹੀ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਪਰ ਦਾ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਹੈ।

Let the knowledge of the One God be the ceremonial mark on your forehead.

ਇਹ ਅਨੁਭਵਕਤਾ ਹੀ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਹੈ।

Let the realization that God is within you be your discrimination. ||4||

ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿੱਤਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,

Through ritual actions, God cannot be won over;

ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਚਣ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

by reciting sacred scriptures, His value cannot be estimated.

ਅਠਾਹਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਵੇਦ ਉਸਦੇ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ।

The eighteen Puraanas and the four Vedas do not know His mystery.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

O Nanak, the True Guru has shown me the Lord God. ||5||20||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਮਰਪਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਟਹਿਲੂਆ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

He alone is the selfless servant, slave and humble devotee,

ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਨੌਕਰ, ਗੋਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਗਤ ਹੈ।

who as Gurmukh, becomes the slave of his Lord and Master.

ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੀ ਓੜਕ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।

He, who created the Universe, shall ultimately destroy it.

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

Without Him, there is no other at all. ||1||

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Gurmukh reflects upon the True Name;

ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਓ।

In the True Court, he is found to be true. ||1||Pause||

ਸੱਚੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਨੂੰ,

The true supplication, the true prayer

ਆਪਣੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੰਤ ਸਰਵਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਲਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

- within the Mansion of His Sublime Presence, the True Lord Master hears and applauds these.

ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਚਿਆਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣ ਉਤੇ ਸੱਦ ਘਲਦਾ ਹੈ,

He summons the truthful to His Heavenly Throne

ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

and bestows glorious greatness upon them; that which He wills, comes to pass. ||2||

ਤੈਡੀਂ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।

The Power is Yours; You are my only Support.

ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਹੈ।

The Word of the Guru's Shabad is my true password.

ਜੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜ਼ਾਹਿਰਾ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਚਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, goes to Him openly.

ਸੱਚ ਦੇ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦੀ।

With the password of truth, his way is not blocked. ||3||

ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮਣ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

The Pandit reads and expounds on the Vedas,

ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵੱਖਰ ਦੇ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ।

but he does not know the secret of the thing within himself.

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਅਤੇ ਗਿਆਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ,

Without the Guru, understanding and realization are not obtained;

ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

but still God is True, pervading everywhere. ||4||

ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਕਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਾਂ?

What should I say, or speak or describe?

ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਰੂਪ! ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈਂ।

Only You Yourself know, O Lord of total wonder.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਇੱਕ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ,

Nanak takes the Support of the Door of the One God.

ਉਥੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਾਨ ਹੈ।

There, at the True Door, the Gurmukhs sustain themselves. ||5||21||

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਕੱਚਾ ਘੜਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੈ। ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਮਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

The clay pitcher of the body is miserable; it suffers in pain through birth and death.

ਇਹ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਰੱਬ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਇਹ ਤਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।

How can this terrifying world-ocean be crossed over? Without the Lord - Guru, it cannot be crossed. ||1||

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੈਡੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ। ਤੈਡੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।

Without You, there is no other at all, O my Beloved; without you, there is no other at all.

ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰੰਗਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਕਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਰਹਿਮ ਦੀ ਨਿਗ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।

You are in all colors and forms; he alone is forgiven, upon whom You bestow Your Glance of Grace. ||1||Pause||

ਮੇਰੀ ਸੱਸ ਮੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦੀ। ਭੈੜੀ ਸੱਸ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦੀ।

Maya, my mother-in-law, is evil; she does not let me live in my own home. The vicious one does not let me meet with my Husband Lord.

ਸਾਥਣਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਲ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ।

I serve at the feet of my companions and friends; the Lord has showered me with His Mercy, through Guru's Grace. ||2||
